Not working

Is this not supported for 7.1.3? I have the option to add keywords, but when I select the Cisco Keywords from the drop down and click edit, there is nothing in there. I can open the file in notepad and see all of the expressions, but they are not showing up in securecrt.

Hi kvachamp,

The ability to edit and color keywords (and regular expression support) was added in v7.3.

Changes in SecureCRT 7.3 (Beta 1) -- August 7, 2014 (
New features:

  • Windows: Added support for regular expressions in keyword highlighting.
  • Added the ability to specify colors for keyword highlighting.
  • In keyword highlighting, the styles (reverse video, bold, and color) can be combined.
  • Added the ability to edit keywords used for keyword highlighting.
Version 7.1.3 is at least 5 years old, you might want to check upgrade eligibility here. Or consider purchasing an upgrade if not eligible for a newer version (with your current license).

Okay, thanks for the information. Unfortunately, our version is not eligible, and is purchased by my company, and they have not approved funding for upgrades. I'll have to deal with not having my highlighting for now :/

S:"Keyword List"=
D:"Match Case"=00000000
Z:"Keyword List V2"=00000047

Hello all,In review, here's how to use the example Casey provided:
  1. Make sure you're running SecureCRT version 7.3 or newer. Support for regular expressions in keyword does not exist in versions prior to 7.3.
  2. Find out where your SecureCRT configuration folder is (Options > Global Options, General > Configuration Paths).
  3. Locate the Keywords folder that is found in SecureCRT's configuration folder. If the Keywords folder does not yet exist in your configuration folder, go ahead and create it there: Keywords
  4. Download the Cisco Words.ini file and save/copy it into the Keywords folder.
  5. Edit your Session Options > Appearance > Highlight keywords such that the Name dropdown is set to Cisco Words, and the Color option is enabled in the Style section.
  6. Optional: Edit the Default session to make this change to all of your ad hoc, existing, and future sessions.

Here are the example screen shots Casey provided:

Hi all,

Good news! Regular expression support in SecureCRT/Linux has been added to a pre-release build of SecureCRT.

If you would like to try the new build:

  • Please send an email to support@vandyke.com.

  • Please reference "RegEx Linux Feature Request" (or similar) in the subject line.

  • If not writing us from the email address associated with your VanDyke Software download account, then please include that email address in the body of your email. A download account is how we make pre-releases available to individuals.

Keyword highlighting performance has been improved in SecureCRT 8.7.1, which was released yesterday. The performance is significantly better on Windows. You can download it here:
