SecureCRT as tty?

Is there any way to use SecureCRT as the "terminal" for an arbitrary command-line shell (cmd.exe, cygwin tcsh, etc.) that is NOT running on a serial or TCP/IP port?

McAfee has finally destroyed my ability to run cygwin sshd/inetd/etc. on my desktop, and I'd like to be able to keep using SCRT rather than drop back to rxvt and its sadder cousins.

Hi ErnieLongmire,

If I understand correctly, there needs to be an option to launch a command shell inside the SecureCRT terminal window that does not require a serial or TCP/IP connection. Basically, the option to launch a local shell from inside SecureCRT.

Is this correct?

That would be the intent, yes -- any arbitrary shell.

Hi ErnieLongmire,

Thanks for the clarification!

This is not currently possible in SecureCRT.

I have entered a request to see if the option to open a local command shell could be added to a future release of SecureCRT.

If this is added, a post will be made here.

If you would prefer to be contacted via email, please send me a message and reference this forum thread (2503).

Local shell support has been added to SecureCRT 8.7*. CMD.exe, PowerShell, or any console application can be specified as the local shell.

SecureCRT 8.7 is in beta. The installer can be downloaded here:

* Must be running Windows 10 build 1809 or later (or Server 2019)
